Zangla is a beautiful destination situated at a distance of 35 km from Zanskar. This is a famous tourist destination of Leh and Ladakh renowned for its uplands, barren cliffs and plateaus. The spectacular natural beauty of this place calls on large number of tourists from several parts of the globe. This place was ruled by a titular king until few years back. There is an old castle atop the hill from where the king ruled this place. But after his death the castle got ruined. Although this chapel is in ruins but its architectural beauty still calls on large number of tourists from across the globe. From this castle tourists get a bird's eye view of the entire valley which is really awe inspiring.
Old Nunnery situated near the ruined castle is a prominent tourist attraction of this place. Large number of tourists comes here to see the austere lifestyle of the nuns of small monastic community.
There is also a small monastery located in a small village of Tsa-zar which is worth visiting. The village is situated between Stongdey and Zangla. This age old monastery is renowned for its exquisite frescoes whose beauty is praised across the globe. These frescoes give deep insight into Buddhist religion.
Another attraction of this place is an old rope suspension bridge which is an example of folk engineering. This bridge is no longer in use because of the new footbridge which is used to cross the river. Zangal is also famous because of several trekking routes which start from here. This place is the starting point for several thrilling and exciting trekking routes.
Among all the trekking routes the Padum-Strongdey-Zangla-Karsha-Padum round trip trek is the most famous one.
This trek gives tourists an opportunity to experience almost all the natural and cultural sites of Zanskar. The attractions which are covered in this trek excite and enthral trekkers who come here from different parts of the globe. This trekking route is open only in summer season especially in June because of the favourable climate. During winter months this place is enveloped by thick layer of snow which is another charm of this place. The other places in and around Zangla which are worth visiting are:
Rangdum
It is situated halfway between Kargil and Padum. This monastery was founded by Losang Geleg Yeshe Drogpa in the 18th century. An assembly hall of this monastery is worth visiting because of many beautiful Buddha statues.
Sani
This is one of the oldest gompas in Zanskar which is named after former king of Kashmir. The Gompa is built amidst the village on a raised platform. The prayer room of this monastery is the foremost thing to see here. It is a large hall adorned with Buddha statues, frescoes and thankas paintings.
